RUNE HORSES

Sarah describes these pieces: I've wanted to create a line of pieces that explored an abstracted spiritual interpretation of the equine, and Rune Horses is a realization of that goal. These designs aren't pre-sketched, but simply done on a whim in the original clay, which lends to their energy, I think. "Rune” is derived from the early Anglo-Saxon word "runa", meaning secret or mystery, and evolved spiritual layers associated with magic and divination. Individual runes comprised the runic alphabet, which was used for communication and spells by various ancient European cultures. Each runic letter was believed to possess the supernatural powers of the elements, the indomitable heart of the beasts, the potent forces of life and death and the infinite mysteries of the Universe. And like runes, the prehistoric relationship between horse and human is shrouded in mystery and profound meaning. Enduring from unknown origins, this bond grew to permeate nearly every culture to shape human civilization in serendipitous ways, changing both species forever. The horse now everlastingly resides in the depths of the human psyche and lore, still a partner in the ever-changing journey through time and circumstance that began so long ago. And so this first set of Rune Horses, which I sculpted in 2006, blends Celtic, Norse and Slavic stylistic influences to express the power, freedom, grace and spirit of the equine, as a new talisman for the horse lover. In this way, the runes live again, reinvented, to capture the essence of this unparalleled animal to whom we owe so much. The large one, 1A, is approximately 4.25 inches diameter, the medium one, 1B, is approximately 3.25 inches diameter, and the small one, 1C, is approximately 2.75 inches diameter.
