ERTL

empty I believe this company is based in China but am not sure. This company originally only produced small rubbery plastic model horses and farm animals about Stablemate size or smaller. They included two types of model horses, each of a different quality. The nicest original models are the "Collectible Animals" horses, which come in sets of an adult and a foal of different breeds. These are about Stablemate sized and nicely detailed with pretty good conformation and musculature. The lesser quality horses are in their "Big Farm," "Farm Country," "Shed Playset", and "Riding Stable" sets. They stand from 1" tall to near-Stablemate size and lack the detail of the larger models.

Ertl began producing Traditional-sized model horses in 1997; these large plastic horses are, I believe, made from a brittle plastic unlike Breyer's more flexible tenite, but they are very inexpensive to collect. The new large Ertls also have hair manes and tails something like Mattel's "Barbie" horses, but Ertls are more realistic than Mattel's horses.

Alicia reports (5/05) that Ertl created a traditional scale line, in two series, called Treasured Horses Collection. I have no specifics which pieces were in which series.
