PIT FIRING
This is something new Cheryl is doing. Actual Pit Firing like they used to do years and years ago. There is a group that has been getting together to do it. Everything that comes out is so fragile.

Tang Dynasty style horse
The first is a Tang Dynasty type horse Pit Fired in October of 2008. It is very rare to be able to get the color tan when pit firing. She got it on this horse.

Raku Wall plaques
The second is a horse vase that was Pit Fired also in October of 2008.
Raku is a very old method of glazing pottery. Also a very dangerous method. Extreme care must be taken. The piece is first placed in a 2000° kiln. Cheryl's son, Austin, is helping with the lid to the kiln in this photo. Cheryl is about to put a vase into the kiln.
It is taken out of there with long tongs and placed into a can that is flaming, then covered with a lid. The smoke helps bring out the color.
