Laurie Jo Jensen’s Touch of the Sky, Art of Fire
Created 2007. Five different unique test pieces; these were
not put into production due to cost.
By himself, “Verde Oceanic” has a fired Translucent White Art Glaze Base, with Tone over Tone iridescent Dark Green/Gold/Pink smoky mirror w/bright Sapphire Blue Neck & Head & in back, Tone over tone smoky iridescent pink & green.
Top shelf L/R are “Pistachio Green” & “Jungle Green”. Both show the characteristic “stone grain” art glaze feature of teeny, tiny little pin prick texture. “Pistachio Green” in front is ∏ Shiny Pearly Mirror Leaf Green & ∏ Shiny Copper & back has large patches of shiny pearly mirror leaf & mint green w/mirror copper patches. “Jungle Green” in front is shiny pearly mirror leaf green w/blue mirror shoulder, gold mirror head & in back has dramatic wild swirls of pearly mirror mint to dark green w/slate blue touches.
Bottom shelf L/R are “Verde Jade”, that started with a translucent white art glaze, and “Black Marinace” which has a black art glaze base. “Verde Jade” has large patches Forest Green w/Gold Mirror, small patches of pearl gold, blue & purple all on bright mirror copper & in back, Shiny swirled Aqua, Dark Blue & gold w/prismatic effects on bright shiny copper. “Black Marinace” looks like actual marble would if marble had mirror effects! Black, copper, gold, green & slate swirled all over.
Cindy describes these pieces: It’s common knowledge that there’s a high (typically 50%!) scrap/explode rate on “normal” Raku and I’ll no longer do any of the “double Raku’d” “White” & “Black” ones like “Anthracite”, “Frosted”, “Darth Vader”, “Black Honey” & “Grotto” (the last examples left, check the whole selection here) because, since they have to be glazed, fired, & burned twice, there’s DOUBLE the scrap rate, and cost so much to produce it would be stupid to add to the line if we want LS to stay in business!
So he tried something completely different & experimental—glazing and firing with an art glaze, THEN using his Raku glaze over that, kiln firing, then FIRING BY FIRE! The result, which I just picked up, are 5 gorgeous test pieces on Laurie Jo Jensen’s “Touch of the Sky” (his favorite mold, and I’m pretty darned smittened by it, too!), that exhibit completely different effects from either “Art of Fire” OR the “Blacks & Whites”!
