ancy Weimer Belden, N.J.E.A.A., has been an equine artist in almost every phase of the art. She started as a child when her Grandfather bought her her first oil paints and made her canvases from cardboard and cheesecloth soaked in a plaster-like solution.
Later she married a veterinarian and raised four children, while doing oil portraits of horses and helping her husband on farms with her children in tow.
After moving to New Jersey in 1980, she made art her profession. First oil painting horses, then teaching herself to sculpt. She finds that to be a constant learning experience. She feels a sculpture should tell a story. She is very interested in historical work, such as Civil War stories and Joan of Arc. She researches every piece she does. She went to Pennsylvania to the Carriage Museum to take pictures and study and take notes before she started a Russian Troika in harness.
Besides doing her own limited edition work, she does trophies for horse shows. She's been commissioned to do trophies for Fair Hill International, Festival of Champions, Gladstone Driving, a memorial on Long Island, and also, the World Championship Singles Driving Trophy for Gladstone Driving, but unfortunately, the show was canceled because of the West Nile Virus. She's done commissioned bronze portraits and freelance sculpture for companies who produce and market them in porcelain or resin. Some of the companies are The Franklin Mint, Brielle Gallery, Austin Productions, Stallions, USA, Sam's Celestial Treasures, All Things Equine, Bow River Jewelry, and Oklahoma Casting. She has exhibited her work at many shows and has several awards including the AAEA Founders Award 1997.
She has her own horses on her property and is surrounded by state land with plenty of riding trails. She has ridden her Thoroughbred in Dressage and her Quarter Horse in Western Pleasure and Trail classes. Most assuredly an all around horsewoman!
Nancy was one of the exhibitors at The American Academy of Equine Art at Kentucky Horse Park Sept. 23- Oct. 31, 2006.
