From Chris Nandell on whether prepping is needed on glossy finished "OF" pieces:
YES! Especially with a glossy glaze, so that your paint work will have something to "hold on to". I recommend the KRYLON Red/Rust color Automotive Primer. (This color dries the fastest and works the best in my experience.) It will adhere well to the glossy finish *and* will provide a good surface for your paint to grab ahold of too.
