How about hosting on a “free site”? Sometimes, you get what you pay for.
Pros of using "free" site hosting (e.g., ISP pages; freewebs.com): Low(er) cost. Little system maintenance. Great for a short term presence.
Cons of using "free" site: Not a very professional appearance. Limited bandwidth so customers will not be able to see your information once limits are exceeded (for the day). Also check the terms of service for the site as you might lose copyright to your images (and/or text), as well as be limited in what and how you can sell things. There may be no guarantee of service availability. Hosting company may advertise on the page (including competitors/non-related items) to recoup the costs associated with hosting your information, or shut down the free service.
Then there’s the possibility of hosting images on a free site, such as flickr, photobucket, or webshots.
Pros of using “free” services to host images: Low(er) cost. Little system maintenance.
Cons of using “free” services to host images: Limited bandwidth so customers may miss out on information. Service includes advertising on page (which can detract from images). Little control over the appearance/formatting of images. Possible restrictions on use outside domain (i.e., using to host images on auction site). Setting/resetting of access to images/folders (or utilizing password).
Note, soon after this article was written, it was announced that Getty Images, one of the largest stock image houses in the world is planning on licensing images from Flickr. No actual contracts have been negotiated nor announced yet, so the impact of any income is unknown and undetermined.
