Designing a Web site

What information to present

emptyNow that you know your audience, determine what they want to know.

The most important information to provide to the customer may be contact information.  This should be easy to spot on the front page and any lower page that has significant links (or where folks may have questions).

Then you need to present information on what you have for sale, or describe the services you offer.

In laying out information, links to contact and sales information on the main page should be the primary focus.  These links should be easily visible and quickly identified.  Having to “page down” many times is not recommended.

While including information on the antics of your animal friends or your opinions on the hot topics of the day can be presented on your web site, it should not be the main focus of links and layout in a commerce-centric site.

Looking at the Model Horse Gallery main page, you can see that the main links emphasize pointing to the galleries of the artists and artisans, followed but supporting links. (And as of the writing of this article, a public announcement of a stolen horse is prominent.)
