TIMEPIECE
"Timepiece" was Sommer's second jumping horse sculpture, submitted for the "Resins by Randy" line in 2006.
Sommer was captivated by the idea of a large horse taking off at a jump, supported only by the hind legs. However, the lack of good references of horses at this stage of the jump, and a change in sculpting materials from her original jumper "Extreme Justice" combined with too many alterations and changes of the original clay, resulted in a nice performance model that did not have the same universal appeal of her first jumper, "Extreme Justice".
The original EJ was created in 100% Plastina clay, while Timepiece was sculpted in Super Sculpey with epoxy legs. Plastina allows the horse to be sculpted and viewed completely as a whole, while the Sculpey/Epoxy combo means the body is sculpted and the legs added separately. Changes to a Sculpey/Epoxy horse must be done by chopping apart appendages and attaching them back together again. (With a lack of good references, the original "Timepiece" was cut apart and reassembled several times over before the final release.) Sommer found the entire process extremely frustrating, and felt this showed in the final sculpture of "Timepiece".
Later, this sculpture was sent on to a fellow artist named Rebecca Turner, who reworked the model with fresh eyes and new interest, and together they created "Justin Tyme" who replaced "Timepiece" on the Resins by Randy line by 2008. About 25-35 copies of the "Timepiece" sculpture were produced before the model was replaced on the line by "Justin Tyme", the modified version of this resin.
"Timepiece" is now discontinued.
